I have a 48" built in kitchen aid side by side that has been diagnose with a bad compressor. The repair man is estimating a cost of about $1500- $1800. Should I replace the compressor or am I better off getting a new 36" refrigerator for about the same cost? The refrigerator came with the house and I cannot afford a new 48" built in. Thank you for your help.

If this refrigerator is 20 years old or older, I'd say replace. The compressor is pricey and it takes 4 to 5 hours to change out. Changing compressors does nothing for the fan motors, thermostats, or coils that can still fail.
