You may be running in an unsafe mode.
In a 3 wire hook up the Neutral must be connected to the frame/machine.
There is usually a ground strap from the Neutral (center connection on the units terminal strip) to the frame.

The reason for this is that if you loose Neutral and a hot wire touches the machine case/frame and then you touch the machine and say a water tap ZAP, 115 volts right across your heart.
If nothing else it will scare the livin out of you. If it is someone with a heart problem or a child, it could take their life.

This may also be why your breaker did not trip, if the pop you heard was a short to frame.

In a 4 wire hookup this ground strap is disconnected/removed and the machine is grounded to earth ground through the line cord.

Dear kstalker1974,

The following is to assist you and ensure your dryer cord is hooked up properly. Once you have hooked up the cord properly do not apply any power until you have carefully looked over all visible connections.

For Three Prong Cords the Center cord wire goes on the center terminal, the left on the left and the right on the right.

Note: There should be a ground strap or wire that runs from the center terminal to the dryer case.

For Four Prong Cords the White cord wire goes in the center, the Red on the Right and the Black on the Left.

The green cord wire goes to the case or the external ground screw.

Note: Be sure to disconnect the ground wire or strap that runs from the center terminal to the case.

If you smell anything burnt yet cant tell where it is coming from you may consider having a local appliance technician come to your home.
