Maytag Centennial gets out of balance banging the tub against the walls, especially with small loads. Also, clothes get wrapped tight around the agitator - especially towels, jeans.

Other posts recommend replacing the suspension for the out of balance (rods and springs), but curious if the out of balance would also cause clothes to get wrapped around the agitator.

follow up...

watched the wash cycle without clothes, detergent
washer completely filled up with water - should it do this without clothes.
the agitator top and bottom section is turning clock wise - creating a whirlpool
The tub is slowly turning clockwise in small steps - I think it wants to turn counter clockwise

Finally figured it out, for light loads the agitator top section is not supposed to turn, however, the water should only fill up partially. The bottom section of the agitator does the work (top half of agitator is above the water).

In my case, the water was filling to the full level, then washing with the agitator top and bottom locked - which then tended to wrap clothes around the agitator and create a large in balance.

The air line and nipple at the tub were clear, therefore my control panel is bad.
