Hi Everybody,
I'm new to this forum and have a problem with my Kitchen Aid refrigerator model number KSSC42QMS03. Just recently, a high pitch whining sound has developed. The sound goes away when the refrigerator door is opened as the light/control display comes on. It will start back up again when the light/control display panel is off, even if the door is open, if the door light switch is not activated. Whether the compressor is on or off does not seem to make any difference. The noise sounds like a slightly fainter version of the beeping sound when the temperature control buttons are pushed, but it's a constant sound, not a beep.
I've also tried turning off the switch on the control panel and tried opening and closing the refrigerator door. When the panel is off, the noise is no longer there. Opening and closing the refrigerator door when the panel is turned off does not make any difference, there's no noise. The noise only seems to be there when the panel is on and when the panel is not lit.
The refrigerator and freezer seem to be working fine as everything still stays cold. I tried turning off the main switch behind the grill cover (per Kitchen Aid's instruction when I called them, waiting 10 minutes before turning back on to see if it helps) and the problem still persists.
The noise stays consistently on for the most part, but every once in a while, it will go silent. And then a bit later, it turns back on again. Anybody have any idea what is wrong? I think it's somehow related to the user control display board. Not sure if replacing the board will solve the problem. Kitchen Aid is no help as the warranty on the unit is only good for the major parts such as the compressor and sealed unit parts. Any thoughts? I need desperate help! Much appreciated. Thanks.

Remove freezer panel and run refrigerator, if the noise is gone, probably the fan blade hitting something. If you still hear the noise, probably noise from the cap tube where it enters the evaporator. If so, foam insulation on the cap tube end will solve the problem.

The compressor has started to cycle on and off repeatedly. Also, at times, the display panel will not display correctly. It will intermittently blink and sometimes not come on at all. Then it will go back to normal. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Seems like a bad control 2320696 You would need a meter to confirm.

Hi Rich,
Thanks for the advice. How difficult is it to replace the control board? From the parts diagram, it looks like all I need to do is remove (3) screws and it should pop out. Please advise. Thanks.

You have to peal off the overlay to get at the front screws.
