Hello,

The dryer runs hot then shuts down after 10 minutes or so. The hot temperature seems to be hotter than it used to be.

The fabric select switch does not change the temperature.

After the dryer cools down it will start and run again but shuts down after getting too hot after 10 minutes or so.

FYI I just spend time here trying to help a few folks as do others so I am not affiliated with AppliancePartsPros.

Looking at your problem I would say others beside myself are sort of stumped by your symptoms.
You may have two problems.

After the dryer cools down it will start and run again but shuts down after getting too hot after 10 minutes or so.
This sounds like the motor is overheating and tripping it's internal thermal protect. You then have to wait for the motor to cool down and the internal protect to reset before you can restart it.
This can be a number of things:
Check that the seal at the blower is OK, perhaps hot air is blowing back onto the motor causing it to overheat. Also check that your vent system is clean and the outside louvers are opening. Also check/clean the blower wheel.
Check the mechanical drag on the motor. Turn the drum by hand in the correct direction, it should turn fairly easily. You may want to try this on a couple others to get a feel for it.
Check that the motor is not clogged solid with lint.
Could be that the motor is on it's last legs.

The fabric select switch does not change the temperature.
The heater temperature should not be able to shut the unit off so I think this is problem #2.
Could be the motor is not providing enough air flow and so it just seems hotter.
Could be a grounded element.
Check the heating coil.
Unplug the unit and both wires to the coil.
Check it with a meter, should be around 10 to 12 ohms.
Then check from each side of the coil to the case/frame, both should be infinite ohms (open). If not the coil may have sagged or broken and is touching the case. This can cause it to run on high and the thermostats cannot regulate it so the thermal cut-off blows.

Do you have the wiring diagram for this unit, if not take a look in the control console. You will probably need it and a meter to track this problem down.

OK, if you look at the thermostat (Item 24 in Section 6) you will also see a thermostat heater (Item 26 in Section 6).
You are correct that the heat is controlled by the fabric select switch.
No heat - they usually disconnect the heating coil.
High heat - the thermostat controls the heat by itself, thermostat heater is off.
Low heat - the thermostat heater is turned on. It adds heat to the main thermostat causing it to cycle more often resulting in a lower heat output from the main heating coil.
Medium heat - they switch in a resistor inline with the thermostat heater, this causes the thermostat heater to run cooler and therefore adds less heat to the thermostat than the low heat setting. The thermostat then cycles less often than low heat so you get a medium heat output from the unit.

Do you have the wiring diagram, if not I will try to find it for you.
It and a meter should make troubleshooting the heat problem easier.

Got to work on the dryer this weekend.

I did blow out the motor. There was more lint than I expected even after having blown it out. Looks pretty good now.

I checked the element with the meter. Measured about 10 ohms as you indicated. No short with the cabinet, base, etc.

I ran the dryer with no heat. The dryer shut down after about 7 minutes. I disconnected the dryer , reached in and was able to touch the motor with no discomfort. It just didn't feel that hot.

I waited an hour and ran the dryer on low temp until it shut down after about 7 minutes again. The temperature in the drum did seem warmer than it should on low temp.

I waited an hour and ran the dryer on high temp until it shut down after about 7 minutes again. The temperature in the drum was about the same as it was on low temp.

Blower seal is good.

Drum turns easily.
