Refrigerator and freezer stopped working completely (aside from the light bulb). Looked in the back and the motor was VERY hot. Is that something that can be fixed rather than replacing the whole appliance? and how would I go about doing that?

Let it cool awhile and turn it back on to see if the compressor starts or does it just try to start and you hear the compressor relay clicking every few minutes.
If it runs and starts cooling, is the fan near the compressor running and are are the coils getting warm.
