The problem I am having is that the washer has stopped agitating. It has been making some grinding noise and is leaking oil on the floor.
It seems that there is agitating movement but the agitator does not engage. The agitator can be spun by hand freely in either direction while the unit is running. The spin cycle works.

You could be looking at two separate problems. The oil on the floor is a sign of a bad gear case (or, transmission). This can also be the cause of the problem with the agitation; OR you may also need an agitator repair kit (Not nearly as costly as a replacement gear case.).

This video has a section, I believe, on the removal of the gear case. Unless you REALLY want to hang on to the machine, it may not be worth your time and money to repair.
On the other hand, balance the cost of the new gear case against that of a new washer; PLUS the benefit of being the family hero for fixing the machine...I would personally spring for the parts.

It seems this might take care of the grinding noise but I don't see how this woul affect the agitator engagement, or are you saying should get an agitator repair kit also. if so what do I order?

If the gear case is malfunctioning, it may affect the agitation. If it's a separate problem with the agitator, here's a repair kit. You'll need to know which cam you need (long, medium, or short). You might be able to get this information from SearsPartsDirect.com Part number: AP3138838

Thanks I will check this out. Since this is oil leaking from the gear box what is the cause? Is there a seal where the shaft leaves the top of the gear box or could itbe the gasket on the gear box? Bill

Naturally, we can't tell over the internet where the oil is coming from. The gear case IS somewhat servicable; parts are available. You may get lucky as you observe the machine in operation, and see where it leaks. Just be sure to jumper the lid switch when you remove the cabinet, and the machine becomes fully operational for your inspection.
