Our family fridge died this morning and after a few words and funeral services we hauled it out and went to find a new one. My neighbor/friend had an older electrolux that had been sitting in his garage (unplugged) for over a year, it had been in his home when he bought it. I cleaned it out for the better part of two hours, and I did think to plug it in first and everything turned on so I thought it was fine, but after loading it up I realized: It's not getting cold.

I pulled it out and looked behind and the compressor is pretty warm, the lights come on, but I don't know fridges so I'm not sure where to start looking for the problem. I'd appreciate any pointers you can give me.

It seems like it's vibrating a little but it's not exactly running.

Update: I found what seems to be a water reservoir puttyed to the top of the compressor. I filled it and heard it running through the tubes and it seemed like there would be some improvement- the compressor even turned on for a few minutes, but still no cooling.

If it started to run, then stopped, you probably have a bad start device on the side of the compressor. If you laid it down while moving and plugged it in soon after up righting, you now have oil trapped in the capillary tube.
