Our side by side freezer / refrigerator stopped working this morning.
Both sides are warm, a few months ago the water & ice despenser portion stopped working as well.
Any parts worth replacing to repair this? Is this a motherboard issue?
I saw similar posts and that was the solution for some?
More concerned about Freezer/refrigerator working...was living without the water/ice

If the compressor and all fans not working, most probable problem is the motherboard. It is possable the evaporator fan motor shorted and took out the dc supply in the motherboard, but rather rare. If you have a meter, you could check things, otherwise just replace the board.

Thanks for your quick reply.
I don't have a ohm/volt meter as I'm not an electricition just a poor dude that is handy and trys to save money by doing it myself.
I do have a simple two probe type current detector with the bulb that lights if theres an electrical current, does that help any?

Looks like you had a sudden failure of the board, otherwise, some things would be working, I would just replsce the motherboard.

Thanks again for your advice, for my model (according to this sites parts list) the motherboard is going to cost me $135 so before I drop that money down...Could the failure of the first two features (water dispenser / ice maker) cause the motherboard failure?
I'm good with taking your professional advise and the price is the price, I'm just leary that what if I replace the motherboard and it gets blown up by some other pre-existing part failure?
Am I at that risk or is there a way to determine if I'm at that risk?

If you look at the replacement board WR55X10942 you will see a lot of new relays that the old board did not have. To GE's credit, they isolated the sensitive drivers on the board with relays, so the chance of a burnout are low. I have never had a problem with the new boards, so you should be ok.

Thats good to hear, I know of course nothing is 100% certain, but I'm glad to hear your experiences with this sort of issue have been good ones!
Anything special I need to know to install the new board once it comes?
Any booby traps this "boob do-it-yourselfer" needs to look at for?

Just need pointed plyers to get the nylon standoffs off the board. All the cable plugs are easy to pull off and replace, all different sizes, so just mate with the right size plug.

The motherboard came in so I put aside the time yesterday morning for replacing it...very simple everything went well, I followed the supplied installation instructions provided with the new motherboard...including the severing of the jumper line in The "J1" connector pin from pin 1 to pin 2 and started it back up...and seemingly everything is working fine...getting cold so I'm happy...I THINK SO BUT...this eversharp "do-it-yourselfer" managed to re-install the OLD board!!!
Question is this, freezer is pretty cold but the refrigerator is not as cold as normal even turned up to highest setting of 9...could this be the board or could this be freon? I'd love to save the $140 on the part but if it's needed it's needed...I'm concerned with the tempeture. Its a day running like this.
ps- the water / ice dispenser still not working to boot.

After clipping the thermistor wire, you must use the new board, cannot use the old one.
