I have a WHirlpool side by side. I have found that to keep it at a steady termperature I need to occasionally open the fridge side door and tap (or bang) on the panel at the top that has the slider temperature settings. I do this and the unit turns on. I forget to and ice starts melting and the whole unit gets too warm. What needs to be fixed?

Drop the control panel and tap on the cold control or the adaptive defrost board.

Do I need to replace something? There is nothing in the part diagram called cold control or the adaptive defrost board

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for Whirlpool ED5FHAXSQ00 Refrigerator | AppliancePartsPros.com

Cold control is Item 9 in Section 3 (thermostat)
Adaptive defrost board is Item 6 in Section 3 (CNTRL-ELEC)

The next time it happens just move the freezer temperature control up/down a bit, if the unit/compressor starts then that is the part I would replace.
Do not turn it all the way down to off.
