I have a WHirlpool side by side. I have found that to keep it at a steady termperature I need to occasionally open the fridge side door and tap (or bang) on the panel at the top that has the slider temperature settings. I do this and the unit turns on. I forget to and ice starts melting and the whole unit gets too warm. What needs to be fixed?

Drop the control panel and tap on the cold control or the adaptive defrost board.
