Ok I guess I didnt fill the whole thing out so here goes...

we returned after a weeks vacation to a soaked floor and the washer tub full of water and overflowing even though it was shut off !!

I also had the main water turned off. Now someone told me the ONLY way this could have happened is IF the main didnt shut off tight and the inlet valve stck or is bad,,,true ?

1) if so do I replace the valve or could it have been a fluke ??
2) if i have the main turned on so there is full pressure and the washer off would it fill the tub IF the valve is bad or is it only do it under low pressure ??
3) if the valve does need replacing how do I geth the top off the washer to get at it ??
4) and I probably should replace the washer in the main house shutoff or should I just install a ball shut off above this 50 yr old screw type shut off ?

pls help...thx

Here are your parts

Partially.
Even with the mains shut off tthere is a ot of water in the pipes, depending on the location it may even get water from the hot water tank. I cannot say if the water in the pipes is enough to fill/overfill the washer depends on the house plumbing.

1) if so do I replace the valve or could it have been a fluke ??
Replace the water inlet valve in the washer.

It should not fill with water with the washer off.

3) if the valve does need replacing how do I geth the top off the washer to get at it ??
I am not sure if the following is an exact match to your unit as here is no Kenmore to Whirlpool model number cross reference.

You may have to join the site to download the manual but it is free and is a good site for manuals on many appliances.

I am not sure there is a problem with the mains shut off.
Shut it off and then open a tap or two and watch the meter.
If it advances then you have a shut off valve problem.
Both fixes will work.
The disadvantage of fixing the existing valve is that the water has to be shut off at the street. The advantage is it is less hassle and will be cheaper.

it seems to be drying up with the dehumids on its still very damp, it doesnt smell or anything as it was clean water...we shall see I guess
I left the main water turned on all night and looked in the washer this morning and it was bone dry.....could something have just stuck or something ?? The only thing I did before we left AFTER i turned the main water off is went up to the washer and turned to button to call for water just to release the pressure in the hoses, then I turned it back to STOP and kept the button pushed in....
i just dont know what to do..The carpet guy said the pad will not soak up water it is a commmerical pad and the carpet will dry fine....I may turn on my central ac today that usually drys things up quick...

denman, thx for the replys....The washer is on the main floor its a ranch house, the water heater is on the basement floor...there is not enough water in all the pipes to do this. Its only a single bath home with kitchen sink, bath sink and tub and toilet...They are all on the same floor as the washer.
The main shuts off tight enough you dont see the meter moving, ( its digital ) but im thinking IF it was just a trickle or I didnt get it all the way tight...
Again after ALL night with the water on the tub was bone dry....think I should wait and see ???
Also do you think the carpet will dry out completely ??
Thanks so much

Sorry I do not understand the following.
I would not have released the pressure using the washer control.

I cannot comment on whether the pad will protect the sub-floor but your carpet guy should know so I will agree with him.
Check in the basement for any sign of water getting through the floor under the leak area.

It should dry out OK given time.
You could put paper towels or just towels down and then walk on them to see if you can suck up some additional moisture.

Let it dry a couple days and then move anything that is on it so that it dries under these things.
After a week or till you feel it is dry take a one foot square of plastic and put it on the carpet. Put a couple boards or whatever to hold the outside edges down. Then leave it for a day or so. If you see moisture on the bottom side of the plastic the carpet is not full dry.

It does sound like it may have been just a bad set of circumstances.
The water came from somewhere so you may want to write down the meter reading one evening and the just shut off the mains and then recheck the reading in the mourning.

I would keep an eye on the washer for a month or so just to be sure.
Also the next time you leave just shut the mains off and do not release the pressure.

so by me relaesinbg the pressure does that release pressure on the valve or is the valve magnetic or does pressure keep it closed ??

The pressure does help it stay closed.

ok update; I was advised that when I released the pressure on the washer valve by having it call for water with the water turned off it "relaxes" the valve, that and my main shut off not completly shutting off made this happen ??? ( thx Denman )

so.. i went to the vilage dpw this morning and borrowed the shutoff tool and shut the water off at the curb, I removed my main shut off screw valve and there was NO washer and no screw to hold the washer, i assume this would let water leak by !! It has been this way for awhile because the screw hole was full of crud..

So I ran a tap to clean up the threads and put a new washer and screw and reassembeled it and it seems fine now...

1) So water was probbaly leaking by with no washer there and by me releasing the pressure at the washer it came out in the tub right ??

2)If I had left the basement faucet open this would never have happened right ??

It is a ranch house with the stackable washer and dryer on the living floor BUT there is a 2ft sq hole under and behind that washer that MOST of the water came thru so there was NO standing water on the living floor and no sheetrock damage ...the floors are 2 layers of 1/2" plywood ( 55 yr old hosue ) I did talk to my carpet guy and he said " its all synthetic pad and carpet so it will not mildew or mold, let it dry"

so....

1) do I leave the inlet valve alone, i had the water on last night all night and not a drop in the tub

2) should I buy a pan to go under the washer just in case and have it drain down on to the basement concrete floor to my floor drain ?

3) when I replaced the screw and washer on my shutoff I dug the old packing out from under the packing nut because it was all falling apert, I installed NEW packing but its not the graphite its like teflon , is that ok ???

4) so do I just let the dehumidifers run and let the carpet continue to dry or rip it up...

Yes, I also think that is what happened.

2)If I had left the basement faucet open this would never have happened right ??
Yes, I also agree on this.

1) do I leave the inlet valve alone, i had the water on last night all night and not a drop in the tub
Yes I think you found the problem with a slow leak at the mains so the washer's inlet valve is probably OK.

2) should I buy a pan to go under the washer just in case and have it drain down on to the basement concrete floor to my floor drain ?
That is a good idea but depends on the cost and how easy the job will be.
That is basically what I did under my dishwasher and it has saved me a couple times with the old GE unit I had.
PS: It is a good idea to put a pan under a dishwasher as they can develop slow leaks and rot out a floor. If drain it is not convenient then just get it so it will drain out under the kick plate, at least that way you know you have a problem.

3) when I replaced the screw and washer on my shutoff I dug the old packing out from under the packing nut because it was all falling apert, I installed NEW packing but its not the graphite its like teflon , is that ok ???
Yes, it should be OK.

4) so do I just let the dehumidifers run and let the carpet continue to dry or rip it up...
It sounds like it is drying up OK.
Sounds like it did not get that much water and is no worse then when you get your carpets cleaned so I would just let it dry naturally.
