Microwave runs but makes odd noise and emits burning odor. Not sure if it is heating properly. I dont want to run it because of the burning smell

Thats the best way of finding out whats causing the smell is run it and watch which componant is smoking you wont hurt nothing that isn't already trashed a transformer or a diode with produce odors a mag usually wont for very long and a capacitor will trip breakers

I tried to heat a glass of water for two minutes. Microwave does not heat, still emits plastic burning odor and makes strange noise while running

GE usually has 2-3 screws going into the side of it where the door closes against it .... that side then it will lift up and down
