how would I check what has failed on my freezer ? overload protector ,starter PTC , or run capacitor? I turn the temp down and it hums , then clicks and shuts down .:confused: I have both digital & analog testers ?

Pull off the compressor side cover and remove the start device. If it rattles when shaken, it's bad, order it here AP2112343, a low, low price $2.42. Usually run capacitors don't fail, but make sure you plug it in the new start device.
I would also use a 1000joule surge protector on the outlet, will prevent future failures.
