My Kenmore refrigerator, model 253.5466440A has an in the door ice dispenser and it appears to not be able to deliver cubes. The ice comes out crushed regardless of the setting. I happen to have just come back from being two weeks away, but we had a house sitter who was using it so I don't think it was from lack of use. Any ideas?

Remove the ice container and the cover for the auger motor. Check the solenoid for continuity. If there is no continuity replace the solenoid. The part number for the new one is AP3965453
If there is continuity remove the wires from the solenoid, attach the power probes from the meter to the wires, set the ice dispenser for the whole cubes and holding the door switch pushed in, push the ice cube release button. It should be 120V measured across solenoid wires. If there is athe proper power replaced the solenoid.
If there is no power then the problem is with the ice dispenser in the door.
Let me know and we will go further.
Good luck.
Gene.

Duane,

Does the solenoid clicks when the ice dispenser calls for a whole cubes?

Gene,

I have a Kenmore side-by-side, model No. 253.54622407.

Mine recently stopped giving whole cubes. Just gives crushed, no matter what the setting. I don't know about testing for continuity, but the solenoid does click when I ask for cubed, and does not click when I ask for crushed. I thought it would be the other way around, based on the result, but that's it. Do I have a bad solenoid?

Thanks.

I've been told that I have crushed ice stuck in the tray. I dumped the ice, turned off the ice maker, set the ice tray in the sink for 24 hours to ensure melting/drying, and put the ice tray back in the refrigerator. This worked 3 out of the 4 times it would only make crushed ice. The 4th time it started to make cubed ice on it's own a week after I did the above steps.

Does your refrigerator door make a loud clunk noise when being opened and passing the 40-50% point of opening.

Thanks...
