I found this thread after posting a new one with an identical problem, drum starts with a push and turns freely, but not on its own.

I found other advice elsewhere pointing to motor start capacitor or board, but could not find a capacitor on the model's parts list.

Gene's explanation of the motor sounds very knowledgeable and authoritative, but just wondering before I run out and buy the part and try to install whether these symptoms always point to motor, or how to identify cause with certainty.

Usually dryer motors do not have capacitors. According to the problem description you posted in the different thread (http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/dryer-repair/62259-motor-humms-drum-needs-push-start-spinning.html), the motor has gone bad.

You can take the dryer apart as instructed in the Service manual and check the motor by measuring the windings resistance as indicated in the Tech sheet wiring diagram. Also check how freely the motor shaft is turning.

Thanks, Gene,

I've gotten as far as attempting to remove the blower wheel, but it will not budge, and wrench slips off the hex on the back of the motor.

I guess I can break it off and get a new one, but not sure the best way to do it?? Is there a trick to getting it off, or what is the best way to break it?

The blower wheel is threaded on the motor shaft with left-hand thread.
In order to remove the blower wheel you need a 1/2" socket wrench driver.

If no success, you can break the blower wheel in pieces, using a chisel. This situation is very common and I did it myself many times.

thanks again, Gene, I've ordered the blower wheel. starting out by turning it the wrong way didn't help once I finally figured out the right way. I'll have to chisel it off.

waiting for blower fan, easy install, motor installed successfully. I'm marking this one a winner on saved labor and parts markup costs of at least 200. educational and gratifying too.
