While my dryer is old, the motor isn't I paid for the repairs on my mother's old dryer, and kept it when she got a new one. The motor was replaced in it. This was about 1.5-2 years ago. It sat in storage for the entire time, until about 4 months ago, when I started using it. But the other day, the drum stopped turning in it, and it wouldn't even attempt to start for about 20 minutes (I assume this is a fail-safe on the motor, to keep it from over-heating). I could eventually get it to start humming again, but it wouldn't start until I took out most of the clothes, and gave it a push. The one thing I really noticed with it, was whan I would push the drum, it would seem to bind up in a certain spot (It would be very difficult to turn). After taking it apart, I found that the drum sets on 2 small wheels in the back, and what looks like a felt 'berring' on both sides. Could any of these be wearing out and cause the drum to be difficult to turn? Could this have been the root cause of the motor going out the last time? Also, there was a slight burning smell when it went out the other day. Could this have damaged the motor permenately, or is there hope for the motor to work still? I plugged it in this afternoon with the front off, and the drum out, and the motor came to life. I could see the motor switch between the start cycle and the run cycle. Thanks in advance for your help. -Robert in Tx. By the way, my dryer model # is Whirlpool LGR8857EQ1

There didn't seem to be much resistance in any of the wheels supporting the drum, or in the tensioner pully. Could there be something else causing the motor to wear out prematurely? -Robert in Tx.

Quote:...Could there be something else causing the motor to wear out prematurely?... Yes, it could and it happens pretty often due to an excessive amount of lint, covered the motor. Gene.

Gene. That motor is only has about 4 months use on it, and was replaced about a year and a half ago. I don't see how it could have an excessive amount of lint on it. It looked clean when I looked at it. Is there some sort of test I can perform on the motor to check it out? I just really don't want to replace the motor again, only to have it go out on me again in 4 more months. Thank you -Robert in Tx.

How freely the motor shaft is moving in both directions? Make sure you installed the belt around the motor and idler pulleys in right way. The following is the belt diagram: Gene.

Gene. Yes, it is installed the right way is there an ohm test, or some other test with a volt meter I can perform on the motor to check it out? The motor was very difficult to spin when I first had it apart, but after I ran the motor a few times w/o anything attached, it was easier to spin. I'm glad the motor is only about $75. I spent $225 to replace it through a repair shop. -Robert in Tx

Ohm test would not show anything as long as the motor turns and it does with no or small load.
Try to lubricate the motor bearings, using any car engine oil.
Gene.

I have read dozens of posts and can't find anything that would explain why my dryer won't run after replacing all of the parts. I replaced the motor, timer, thermal fuse and thermostat and all it does is hum and turn without the drum in when i hold down the start button. I have also checked the power source and continuity on all of the wires. Do you think I bought a bad motor?
