I just wanted to clarify what the problem is. The oven turns on by itself. I thought that opening the oven would cause the oven to stop. that didn't work. The only way that I could get the oven to shut off was by pulling out the plug. It has happened twice so far in the last 3 months. It does seem to happen soon after the oven has been used.

I also have a ge profile space saver that started turning on by itself and within a couple of weeks never shut off. Actually only the fans would stay on. The microwave itself wasn't running. The vent door will not open unless the microwave is running. The microwave vents to the front into the house. The profile vpm1870sm1ss isn't on the recall list. Is replacing the magnetron something that I can do on my own? I have no experience with appliances. Also, when replacing the magnetron do I have to worry about discharging the capacitor?

This problem has nothing to do with the magnetron. It can be a shorted interlock switch or a bad control board. The model number you posted is incorrect. Verify and repost it.

Remove the top grill and open the control panel. Check the door switches (#67 on the diagram). If there is nothing wrong then replace the control board. - The door switch Part number: AP2024337

This has happened with our GE Turntable Microwave Oven as well. We have had it for over a year. Just 2 days ago, it would beep, and show the number "3.5" in the LED display, then turn on spontaneously and run for 2 minutes, displaying the 2 minute time in the LED. Opening the door would stop it, but the keypad had become inoperative. We replaced it with a new, identical unit, but it did exactly the same thing! Using a surge protector did not help. I could find no mention of a recall of our unit on the GE site, but I did leave a message with them stating the urgency of the situation, and that I felt it was a potential fire hazard.

Which part exactly did you replace?
What is the complete moiled number of the microwave?

Gene-
We replaced the entire oven, not a specific part. What exactly is a "moiled" number?

Sorry for a typo. I meant "model".
If this is a brand new unit then GE must come over and diagnose the problem.
