I had a drain clog and made the mistake of plunging the garbage disposal. That started a leak. I suspect I damaged an internal seal. There is water leaking out of the bottom of the case. The seal around the sink apprear OK. The label says this is a 5/8 horsepower unit. I see 1/2 and 3/4 units but no 5/8. I'm inclined to replace it with a 1/2, any thoughts? Also, are the mounting flanges universal? I'd rather not replace everything, but just attach a new mechanism to the existing flange if possible. Lowes, which is close by, has Insinkerator disposals are the a direct replacement for the Kenmore? Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

You can replace it with any kind and any make. A new garbage disposer comes with a complete installation instructions.

Gene.

P.S. If you are going to buy it from a hardware store you can ask for a such instructions to read it prior to purchase the unit.
