My washer stops during wash cycle and will start again if i turn off and on or tape the side of the machine. Is it the timer switch or dial timer or somthing else that needs repair.

Since you have not posted a model number I can only give you a generic answer which is to first check the lid switch, and by-pass it to see if that fixes things in which case it will need replacing, or to replace the timer.
Before replacing the timer clean the connections with contact cleaner and reseat and see if that helps.
If you need more info please post the results of what you do and a full model number.
