Hi All,
First let my thank you for this opportunity to vent and ask advice. Secondly, let me explain that I'm pretty familiar with repair procedures and techniques. in my free time I restore and modify cars - rebuilding motors, brakes, clutches, magnetos, etc.
I'm now replacing my 3rd tub seal (two on my present Amana unit) and 1 on an older Speed Queen (same design). In each case I've followed the instructions to the letter, taken every imaginable care, and I've been successful - the Speed Queen is still fine (now my dad's). However, in this last case it's been only two years since the leak/bearing problem returned. The original seal lasted 6.
Is there some little "secret" not mentioned in the destructions, or is this just a hopelessly bad design? I'll greatly appreciate your input. Thanks.

Hi All, Here's an update for you on the Amana hub seal issue.
The last kit - mentioned in the above post, lasted 3 years, 1 month. I still haven't learned of any update/retrofit to this kit. The next seal/bearing will be #4. Still more reasonable than a new machine, but this is getting old... fast.
I've looked at new machines, and I'm not impressed. As the years go by the build quality just continues to decline. I wish I had my grandma's old Maytag back! It worked without incident for over 30 years (I think it needed a belt, once)!
Further, despondent sayeth not.

When it comes to Maytag and you ask if it is "a hopelessly bad design" the answer is almost always yes.
Maytag has changed the part and issued two service bulletins on it. I cannot link you to the bulletins since Maytag has also decided to no longer allow access to the tech library.
Here are the bulletins, see if as an owner you can get Maytag to get them to you.
Technical BulletinTDL-0023A-BNew transmission and seal assembly.CD 1Technical BulletinTDL-0015A-STool required for removal and installation of bearing and seal
Good luck, hope this helps.
