I have changed both elements and the upper high limit thermostat. Normally the water temp is good, BUT.... occasionally the water is hot enough to scald the hide off of a pig!!!! I've adjusted the elements half way down. And the water temp seems to cool down some, but still gets just as hot as before "on occasions".

Dear Gary D.,
I have never had to work on water heaters but they are pretty basic in design. Its possible to be one of the other thermostats.

I replaced the upper element with a 3800 watt and the lower with a 5500 watt as recomended by sears. Could that cause this problem?? The diagram shows a lower high limit thermostat but shows no part avail. the upper has been changed.
