Earlier the dryer shut down completely with no motor, timer control or electical operation indications. I cleaned lit exhaust etc and after a few hours it operated again. Now it shut down again; however, the timer control indicates electrical power and when pushing start button the one hears the motor attempting to start but does not. Is this a defective motor or motor control board?

Thanks, I can turn drum but with some effort. I don't know how much effort is usually required. As you suggest, it is probably the motor. Is it difficult to replace?

I also had my Maytag dryer experience similar symptoms and am in the process of replacing the motor. I have taken the dyer apart to the drum removal stage. Now that I can see everything I have ordered the motor from you guys and it should be here tomorrow. What I need now are helpful hints on removing the old motor... it looks like there may just be a couple of clips holding it into the motor support. Is it as easy as popping off the clips and lifting it out?

I have the 4000 series Maytag dryer and did have to remove snap rings (used two pairs of needlenose pliers) from the motor shaft as well as the fan housing in order to get the old motor out and the new one in. The clips holding the motor to the mount came off easily enough using a screw driver for leverage. All-in-all went pretty easily. Did not disconnect any wires when removing the bulk head, but just laid it on the ground. Had a moment when I plugged it in and tried to start it to see if it worked - it didn't. Then realized I'd forgotten to hold the little door button depressed while trying it and it worked! Yeah! Really glad to have my dryer back operational and having spent only $130 and about an hour's time total instead of an expensive professional house call or a replacement dryer. Thanks!
