The above machine was returned to me after selling it to a customer several months back with a complaint about noise when it attempted to go into spin. The unit was hooked up and with no clothes in the basket I set it up for cold wash, smallest load size and normal wash cycle. The display starts out at 16 minutes and fills with water. It proceeds to agitate and proceeds to 9 minutes. it stops and will not proceed. I reset the control panel and tried to get it to go into spin. after several attempts I got it to start to spin and drain the water but it made a terrible rat tat tat noise at the belt area. The belt is still in decent shape but the motor is fairly warm. There is no distress evident and I need some advice as to what to do next. The machine s/n is 1712031767 and does not show any sign of abuse. HELP

A newer motor of the same horsepower rating and configuration and a brand new belt were installed and an extra tension spring for the idler was installed but the noise persists. The rat tat tat noise at the belt area starts when the cycle gets to the point of pumping out the water. It eventually does pump the water out but the noise is very loud. The plastic helix gear at the bottom of the shaft under the pulley does not look worn . I am still looking for any advice on this unit before I give up .

For the benefit of others who may experience the same noise and chattering problem problem with this brand of washer the helix p/n 38008 on the bottom of the shaft was the problem. I replaced it and the unit now works properly. The plastic does not look to be worn much but apparently it does not hold up very well against the mating surface on the bottom of the pulley. It was not split . I had replaced the belt since it was slightly glazed and since I had a spare motor I used it also but it was NOT the cause of the noise. This unit is about 6 years old and this is a weak link in the design of an otherwise good quality machine

This same unit was returned to me after having sold it to a neighbor several weeks ago. It has the same problem again . The plastic helix is not worn much if at all and not broken .The Speed Queen customer service people suggested it may need to have an extra washer to be installed between the pulley and brake disc. I am asking other techs if they have seen this problem and what kind of repair was done and did it correct the problem long term ? HELP !!!

This unit was repaired by the local Speed Queen dealer after I decided to throw in the towel. As I suspected the pulley was damaged which in turn had damaged the recently replaced helix gear under the bottom of the pulley. The new pulley is made from metal with p/n 204486 as compared to the original which was made from plastic. I anticipate this design change by the plant will make these units now last a long time. The cost was not bad and I am happy with the results
