This Kenmore machine is a basic model but it has worked well and my wife likes it. Last year we had an issue with the machine, which I diagnosed as F8 E1, no fill, long fill. The soure of the problem turned out to be low water pressure from our well pump. I increased the pump output settings to 30/50 and the problem with the washing machine went away.
Today the F8 E1 error returned. When we try to run the machine, the sensing light comes on for about thirty seconds. Then the water turns on, flowing well, but after about three to five seconds it shuts off. Then the machine just sits there until I stop the cycle or unplug it.
I put the machine in diagnostic mode, which revealed the F8 E1 code. I ran the auto diagnostic test and the machine passed all the steps. I also ran some water from a fawcet to make the well pump cycle and tested the machine again knowing that the well pressure gauge was at 50PSI. This did not help. When I ran the diagnostic tests, both the cold and hot water had good flow when the test was checking those valves.
What else could be causing the machine to shut off the water immediately after it starts filling the tub?

Overnight update:
After sleeping on this issue, I ran another test - run the machine in hot water mode. With the wash setting on hot, the tank fills normally. In any of the cold or cool settings, the tank does not fill. I then switched the supply hoses at the wall. With this done, the machine will still fill when set in the hot postion, but still does not in the cold and cool settings. This demonstrates that the water pressure and the hoses are not the issue. The issue must be with the cold water valve, but the cold water valve passes its test when I run the auto test cycle.
What would cause the cold water valve to fail in normal operation but work correctly in test mode?

Afternoon update:
I ran the manual tests and the cold water valve failed. I checked it with an OHM meter and that test failed as well. I have a new valve on order. Interestingly, with the cold water supply switched to the hot valve and the control leads for the valves swapped, any temerature setting works - even hot - but the water is always cold. Kind of odd but we can use this until the new part arrives.
