It also makes a rather loud noise..The dogs need replacing but I can't see this is the issue with it only agitating in one direction. The splins seem to be fine on the bottom agitator.

This machine is 14-15 years old and has washed a ton of clothes...It's been a good one.

Does the capacitor in this direct drive model control this or am I looking at a new transmission/gear box....?

We have a Whirlpool Cabrio washing machine that was making a horrible noise during the rinse cycle so I replaced the transmission and everything went together great. After the washer was hooked back up we did the recommended calibration as instructed but we still can't seem to run a load of laundry. In diagnostic mode the tank will fill, the tub will rotate one or two times and the water will drain but when we run a regular load the LED light never gets off the "sensing" mode. I don't have any idea what to do next, any suggestions?
