Also I cannot find parts for a hot water heater. Can someone help?

First of all, which model do you have?
upd: sorry, totally missed it, since the name of your topic is reduced by forum settings. Still, my advice is still the same.
Check that voltage is getting to the element. If you have an ohmmeter check it. The heating element should have about 9 - 11 ohms resistance. If you have the different number - that's the problem. We had about 15 ohms in our dying InSink-erator.
Have a look at your model's manual if you still have troubles.

All the same advice will be. Apparently the problem was solved by itself ?
