I have a Maytag top loading Washer, model MTW5740TQ0. It is about 9-10 years old. My wife went to wash a load yesterday. She said it filled with a little water, then just started spinning. It would not stop, and had to be unplugged. I plugged it in when I got home, and all it does is spin. I also had to unplug it to stop it. Any idea what may be wrong with this??

Did you try advancing the timer to different positions?
As you stated you had to unplug it to stop, I must imagine that pulling the knob to stop it doesn't work?
Does it continue to spin even when you open the lid (providing the lid switch has not been bypassed)?
If so it sounds like the points (contacts) in the timer might be fused or jammed closed, and if that is the case you will need to replace the timer.
Here is your part number.

Yes, advancing it to different positions does nothing.Pulling/pushing the knob also won't stop it. It continues to spin with the lid open and closed. Your advice makes sense, thank you!
