Hi guys, I have a Kenmore 400 that the timer burned up on. I took it apart and verified that was where the burning smell came from. I replaced the timer (W10199989). The washer will fill and agitate then stops. It tries to step back and agitate for a few seconds then nothing. It will not drain or spin. I verified the lid switch function (fluke 77) and the switch is fine. So I have eliminated the switch and the timer. What else will keep this from draining and spinning. I have tried all cycles and have the same result. This washer was running and stopped due to the timer burning up but something probably caused that.

Is there a humming from the motor? Is it hot to the touch after setting it to spin?

The motor runs in both directions, one for agitate one for spin. The motor's direction determines the gearcase function as well. So your issue is probably one of these parts.
If you've never taken the cabinet off: The cabinet comes off as a whole unit, using the two gold colored clamps to hold it to the rear panel. They release from the cabinet top side, there's a lip down in the end recessed into the top. It's there to stick a screwdriver in and pop them out.

Pull the cabinet and look for loose, corroded, or broken wires at the capacitor and motor terminal. If you bypass the lid switch (connect the two wires that are not ground with a jumper) the machine will run without the actual switch plugged in. I'd look first without power applied of course.

If you had a burnt timer internal contact, it is likely that something is drawing too many amps trying to run, a bad connection/wire, bad winding or centrifugal switch in the motor, or a totally failed gearcase (rare) will cause that.

You are spot on. The washer works great. There was a switch on top of the motor behind the pump that had a bad connection. The other issue was an underwire from a bra in the pump housing. Cant believe it got in there but it did. Cleaned the contacts on the motor and the switch removed the wire from the pump and all problems are resolved. Thanks
