I have a LG front loader, model # WM2277HW. The spinning inner metal tub has cut through the front tub cover. The front tub cover certainly needs replaced as it leaks very badly and is seriously weakened. My question is what caused the spinning inner drum to cut through the outer tub cover? The machine was not making loud noises like maybe a bearing was bad.

If the front edge of the basket has contacted the front tub that badly it's bad news. Probably a broken basket support. That repair is the basket support (probably whole basket) and front and rear tubs. Sometimes you can get away with reusing the rear tub but I wouldn't count on it as there may be damage inside once you get it apart.
Check your owner's manual for any long term warranties. Sometimes the basket has a 10 year warranty. That might make it worth paying for, but expect a large bill still.
