machine is agitating when filling with water and is also adding water during spin cycle. The timer control knob also seems to spin pretty freely. Water is not overflowing it seems to be adding the correct amount of water based on selected water level.

Sounds like the timer has gone bad. Especially if you can you move it in both directions.
