On a recent wash cycle, my trusty Kenmore washer left a number of rusty metal bits, up to 1/2 inch long, in the bottom of the tub. (They were metallic; I thought there was loose change in the tub.) I removed them, and the next wash cycle was fine; no bits. I just did another wash load last night and there were a few small bits. We are preparing to sell the house and I need to keep the washer going for another couple of months. Grateful for any suggestions.

My first suggestion is to find the right model number. My second one is you're lucky you are selling the washer. The rust is probably coming from the metal basket. I've seen them rust free of the drive block and the basket drops to the bottom of the tub. They have to be pretty old to do that.

How does the "metal basket" differ from the tub? Though at this point it probably doesn't matter. Yes, we'll probably have the washer hauled away before we put the house on the market. Thanks so much for your info.

You put your clothes in the "basket".

The "tub" holds the water.

On Whirlpool design 2000 washers the tub was made of plastic and could never rust out. The basket was metal with enamel coating. If chipped or scratched deep enough it would rust. After 20 to 30 years metal things exposed to moisture eventually rust.

If I were you, I'd keep my eye out for a good used washer under $100 to replace this one.

Most helpful, thank you! The washer is probably 20 years old, if not more.

I've decided it isn't safe to use the washer anymore for the next couple of months, to avoid the chance of flooding the garage. Better to use a nearby laundromat. We'll have the washer disconnected and junked before selling the house.
