When we press the start button the fill & wash lights flash. Then after I press the start button for the three seconds to stop, all the lights shut off and then the washer agitates three or four times, then it revolves back and forth four or five times! Weird!? It's suppose to be off or stopped. It's has a delayed reaction to the start button. So here's what I have done to try to fix it. I have turned it off, unplugged it, and reset it several times. I was able to get it to work once or twice, but it takes a lot of resetting and button pushing to only have it work once or twice in the last three weeks. Oh and the spin and drain option works on and off as well. If I have to replace the motor would it be worth the trouble? or should I get a tech out here? or should I just give up and get a new one? Well I mean a newer used one, money is tight. one other thing the spin cycle at the end of the wash cycle was not spinning all the water out when all this trouble started. Ok done. Please help!

I am going to suggest you replace it with a nice used Whirlpool made top loader. If you get one without electronics it should last for years, and it is easy and inexpensive to fix if something goes wrong.
These GE models are great except when they have electronics trouble like you are experiencing.

This is exactly what's happening to my washer (every word). Was really hoping to find some info on what needs replacing, but it sounds like the rule of thumb is to toss the entire machine. Oh well, what a waste!

Decided to look into the problem, and this was an easy fix. The control board (it's behind the control knob on the front of the machine) had a fried chip. I replaced the control board with a used one and everything's working great. Cost about $25.
One tip: when you open the front of the machine to gain access to the control board, you'll see it's connected to another board which has two front knobs on it. The cable between them is not a simple disconnect, so buy both already connected together or you'll need to solder them.
