The washer started making a grinding noise during agitation with a small load on regular setting. The noise went away, and on the next load the washer would not spin. Motor and belt in excellent shape. Bought and installed the pulley and thrust bearing kit. When I turn the pulley slowly counterclockwise the clutch releases before the arrow reaches the minimum mark, using the .031 washer. So, in short, the pulley and thrust bearing kit fixed nothing.
If I put the washer on 'spin', the agitator works as it would when on 'wash' but the tub does not spin. However, if I press down on the top of the agitator the tub will begin to spin and will remain spinning, but can be stopped by light hand pressure.
I had taken the brake assembly apart and inspected it. Plenty of brake lining left. Broke the glaze with fine sandpaper and put everything back together . No change.
Is the transmission bad?
No need for a reply. The transmission is bad. It started making grinding noises during agitation and then stopped the motor dead. Bad transmission. Not worth replacing, a new washer is in the wings.

Well before I read your last sentence I was going to say the transmission was the culprit.
Glad you figured it out, sorry you have to get a new machine and thanks for posting, that will help others.

Sometime over the next few days I'll take the transmission apart to find exactly what failed. Maytag does not impress me. This is the fewest years that I've ever gotten out of a top loading machine. Kenmore machines lasted 18 plus years.
