Our old "Garage Refer" was found warm a week ago. Took a while, but I discovered what I assume to be the defrost timer behind a small hole in the control panel. Twisting it institutes a reset, and the machine will run for a day or two before warming up again. It will freeze a tray of ice pretty quickly, and cools fine while it is cooling. I'm thinking that the defrost timer is turning the machine off, but failing to restart it when cycle is up. Is it safe to assume that this timer is defective, and that replacement of this part will cure the problem, or might I have more significant problems? Machine is WELL over ten years old, actually closer to thirty, but hasn't given us any problems since it was "retired" to the garage probably twenty years ago. It's clean, modern looking, and worth throwing a few bucks at as opposed to hauling it to the landfill.

Thanks for the help.

Your model number is not complete.
Below is the parts for it but you will have to choose the correct unit from the Matching Model Numbers section

See the attachment for your tech sheet.
You may need this to figure out the wiring for a new timer.

I agree with you well worth trying a new defrost timer.
As long as you were gentle when turning the timer's cam. The reason I say this is that sometimes the control thermostat can stick open and when you give it a knock it closes and the unit starts up again.

From your description it sounds more like a timer as your unit should go into a defrost cycle every 8 hours of compressor run time so a day or two between defrost cycles sounds about right.
