I have a Maytag helical drive top load washer (MFG. in 1992) that thumps as it agitates. The noise is in rhythm with the agitator. I'm going to install new belts this weekend and also check the clearance on the stop lug. When I looked at the belts they didn't have any defects that I could find but I'm replacing them anyway. The question that I have is, after the belt replacement, if it still thumps, should I be looking at the brake package?? The washer runs fine in all cycles and does not make any strange noises except the thump, thump, thump, noise when agitating. Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me!

Operate it with the front cover off and see if you can locate the source of the noise. Problems like this are almost impossible to diagnose remotely, we really have to be there. If you cannot fix it I would let it go until it fails. This machine is 22 years old, that is 125 in human years.

Good luck.
