Hello,

I bought a Kenmore freezer off Craigslist for cheap because I'm on a budget.

The ice maker doesn't work and the freezer fan is acting up.


This is the best way I describe it:

The fan noise seems to be coming from the freezer and it rev's up like a car engine for 1 second then back down 1 second then repeats. It does not sound at all like a normal fan should. The fridge was in storage for some time. I did not lay the fridge down during transport.

I used my air compressor to clean off all the dust from the coil on the bottom.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I am assuming that it is just the evaporator/freezer fan that does this.
The compressor and it's fan run OK.

Could be the fan or the adaptive defrost board.

You will have to measure the voltage (120 volts) across the fan.

If it is there all the time and the fan turns on/off then replace the fan.
If the voltage is cycling then replace the defrost board.

I took off the back panel and measured the voltage from the fan. It looks like the voltage goes to 120 volts for half a second then powers off. So, I will buy a defrost board now. Is this the specific part that I need to install now?

I received the part yesterday and I installed it the same day.
It was the Adaptive Defrost Control Board that you recommended.
This has solved the fan issue. Horray!

However, there is still an existing issue with the fridge. The ice maker doesnt make any ice. The water comes out of the dispenser in the front of the fridge just fine. The ice cube try in the ice maker is bone dry. The motor that pushes the ice forward in the big try works fine. It just seems like the water isn't getting to the ice maker.

Do you have any advice?

Should I start a new thread?

This may be a tad more difficult but I went hunting and at least was able to get you some more info.

How long have you waited as the icemaker mold temperature must get below 15 degrees F( see the service manual). If it has been over 24 hours would not be a bad idea to check the freezer temperature should be 0 to 5 degrees F.
You could try filling the icemaker tray with water to see if it will at least make and eject at least one cycle of cubes.
Has it ever made ice? If yes then it could be that the end of the water line at the ice maker is frozen. closed. This can be thawed out with a hair dryer.
the most common cause of it is a bad water valve re: it leaks a couple drops when it closes and this then freezes at the tube tip.
