My Maytag Dryer LDG9316aae works fine in the timer mode but gets stuck in the auto mode. It just keeps running at full heat after the clothes are dry. Is this the timer or is their some type of sensor that detects moisture?

During the auto dry cycle, the timer only advances when the operating thermostat cycles (burner shuts off). Is the burner cycling on/off during the cycle? When the burner cycles off, if the timer does not advance during the time burner is off, you may have a faulty operating thermostat. You could also have an airflow problem which can cause the burner to cycle via the hi limit thermostat instead of the operating thermostat. If that is the case, the timer will not advance.

Thanks, The first thing i checked was the air flow and that was fine. What's the best way to find out if the burner shuts off? is it as simple as listening? As I indicated, there is not problem with it turning on and running. It just doesn't turn off. One night it ran for hours and the clothes were really hot. Are you suggesting that I replace the operating thermostat?

Yes, you might try replacing the operating thermostat. What I do in this situation is to run test leads from both the operating thermostat and hi limit thermostat out the back of the dryer so I can use my multimeter to determine what's going on while dryer is operating normally with cabinet fully assembled...i.e. is the operating thermostat cycling, is burner cycling via hi limit instead or is it not cycling altogether. You say the air flow is fine but we hear that all the time when in fact the problem is air flow. Whirlpool 307250 Thermostat Net - AppliancePartsPros.comEric
