I have a strange problem with my GE gas oven. The oven will not ignite unless a stove-top burner is turned on.
If I turn on the bake function, the igniter glows orange, but the gas does not start flowing to it. Once I light a stove top burner, something triggers the gas to start flowing to the oven, and it ignites. Once the oven is lit, I can turn off the stove top burner, and the oven will heat up to whatever temperature it is set to. However, once it reaches the desired temperature and the gas shuts off, it will not re-light to maintain the temperature unless a stove top burner is on.
I replaced the igniter, but this did not solve the problem. I have also replaced the control board, but that didn't do the trick either.
One repair man diagnosed it as being possessed.
Does anyone have any ideas?? Could a malfunctioning control valve cause this?

This is a gas pressure issue. The safety valve on the range is designed only to operate within a certain pressure parameter. The design of the valve has it open against the flow of gas. In this configuration, the gas pressure actually helps hold the valve closed. By lighting a surface burner, you are lowering the pressure of the system, which allows the valve to open.
