This Maytag was super reliable for 17 years until yesterday.
I diagnosed a failed overload (414RFBYY, 3.40A rating, 130deg open temp) and swapped another, similar one (419PFBYY, 3.63A rating, 125deg open), which popped and smelled like magic smoke instantly. Compressor is Americold SF107-1 (it also says PN2935).

Diagnosis (from memory): Compressor terminals measure 5 ohms to common, 10 between start & run, no shorts to ground. Start relay doesn't rattle and provides continuity between all pins while cold. System pressure (obviously at rest) is ~50 PSI. Voltmeter reads reasonably close to 120V on the relevant leads (at rest, not measured while attempting to start). Hooking voltmeter to capacitor terminals makes the readings change over time.

I would have thought the overload would just trip & reset itself if the compressor was stuck, but I've got a pair of permanently open 4TM overload devices that tell me something is certainly wrong. What does this suggest?

Probably shorted turns in the start winding of the compressor. Ohmeter test will not detect shorted turns. Use of an amprobe would confirm compressor is drawing very high current. Also could be a short to ground inside the compressor that an ohmmeter would not detect.
