Whirlpool Washing Machine Agitates for the entire cycle

I have a Whirlpool Washing Machine Model: LST8244BQ0 that will not drain or spin. When I turn the machine on it fills with water and agitates for the entire cycle with time timer running. When it gets to the rinse and spin cycles it continues to agitate. I have attempted to turn the knob directly to the spin cycle to see if I can get it to just spin. When I do this I hear a loud humming sound coming from the bottom of the washer (motor??). Any idea’s on what the problem might be? Thanks

Thanks for the information. Are there directions on-line on how to replace the timer? I've seen some websites that show how to replace timers but they appear to be for new types.
Is there any chance that there could be another problem is is this a pretty easy diagnosis?

You said it agitates the entire cycle as the timer continues through it's rotation. You didn't say if it drained or anything else. The normal sequence when doing a regular cycle is fill, agitate hi, agitate lo, pause, drain, pause, spin/drain, pause, re-fill for rinse, agitate hi, pause, drain, pause, spin/spray/drain. If it's truely only agitating the entire time and the timer motor is turning then I'm pretty sure it's the timer. The timer has multiple contacts in it to control the sequence of operations including motor direction which determines whether it agitates or spins/drains.
