We had a power surge this morning and i later discovered that our garage r/f is no longer working. The fan is running but the compressor isn't. This was a cheap second unit and I'm wondering if it's worth even fooling with. The only issue is food that is going to spoil.

Could it be the starter relay was zapped in the power surge? I see not much else it could be in such a simple refrigerator. Can the compressor itself be damaged in a surge?

If the fan inside the freezer is running but the compressor is not, then you have to verify if there is proper voltage to the compressor. There are two wires, the white and the red, connected to the compressor start devices. Disconnect these wires and measure the voltage between them while the thermostat calls for cooling and the fan is running. The normal reading suppose to be about 120 VAC.

Post the results.
