trane xe 1000..appx 2004........compressor will not run...air handler runs....had a part replaced in compressor unit 8 months ago..i believe it was a capacitor..looked like a tear gas grenade......3 days ago we had a spike in the power..lites got very bright for 1 1/2 secs. and then the 1 t.v. went wacko but now o k ....... wonder if this spike hurt the capacitor and can i take it out safely and have it checked ???? good thing it it winter and only 83* this weekend.....thanks :o

well,called the fix man because i had surge ins..... ins. co said fix it and send the bill if he believes it was a surge problem.....while he is taking the covers off the unit,the wife butts in and tells him she can't see the numbers on the thermostat lately....he drops his tools and follows her inside while i shake my head...he ask me for new batteries and installs them...walla !! we can see the numbers...we go back outside and to both our amazement the compressor is running............2 AA batteries have control of my unit :eek:

That was hilarious!

In the future, when you replace your batteries in the smoke detectors and CO detectors, you might as well replace the ones in the T-stat however I'm guessing you wont ever let THAT happen again!...:)
