We have a GE Profile Artica refrigerator/freezer (model PSS265SGPASS) that was running fine until 2 days ago. Came home to find both sides registering 44 degrees on the console. Reset the console/thermometer at 0 (freezer) and 37 (refrigerator) and left it run the rest of the night. Next morning, both were reading 55 degrees. Freezer was totally thawed at this point. Both had lights working, fan was working and blowing air...but not cooling. Took back off and vacuumed the dust, verified fan was working, and checked for frost. No frost, and compressor was not running. Trying to decide if it's worth trying to get fixed or to get a new one. Refrigerator is 7+ years old, and parts look to run between $100 - $500 depending on what's wrong. Suggestions? Is this something that a handyman/GE service tech should do, or can a layman do it?

Pull the cover off the motherboard in the back fridg wall and check for bad solder joints in back of the big power relay. If ok, unplug fridg and remove the 3 pin power connector and place a wire jumper between the mating pins that are labled line and comp. Plug in and seeif the compressor runs, if so, replace the board AP4436216

Thanks! We did as you said, there was a joint out and a black mark on both the mother board and the back of the frig. We bought a new board and connected...all is working! AWESOME...saved us a ton of $$$$ this holiday!
By the way...I am from Bellefonte originally, so I am glad a Centre Co. and fellow Happy Valley resident helped me out!
Thanks Rich!

Save the board, it can be re-soldered and used as a backup. Install a 1000 joule surge protector made for appliances in the fridg wall socket, should protect the new board, available at Wall Mart, $8.95. Good to hear you are from Bellefonte, if you get to a football game here at Beaver stadium, stop by concession stand 7 in front of gate B, I am the manager there, will give you a free hot dog, just ask for Rich.
