Last night we noticed that the washer cycle was taking quite a bit longer than usual so we checked on it. The dial was in "spin" position and the motor was running, but the tub was not moving. This morning I tried it again, and at first it would agitate, but not spin, and then after a bit it went back to functioning as usual.

Any suggestions on where to start looking the next time it acts up?

Very likely the problem is a worn out belt. You have to remove the rear access panel to gain access to the belt.
