Hi, I have a Kenmore 90 series that I got from a relative that has been nothing but problems. We have replaced the motor coupling 3 or 4 times already after previous issues. For the past several months we have had to push start it to get it to spin the clothes dry, (all other functions work fine.) For the past week push starting it does nothing and it won't spin at all, even empty. My husband checked the motor coupling again but it was fine. It appears to be either the clutch or the transmission based on my internet research. How do you tell the difference. If you don't open the lid you would never know it wasn't spinning, it makes normal spinning sounds like it is but you open it and it is just sitting there. When my husband had it tilted back to check the coupling there was a small amount of reddish oil leaking, but it doesn't leak otherwise. Does any of this lead to a diagnosis? Is it expensive to repair both? We have been deliberating on buying a new one but it doesn't seem like the most affordable option. Thanks for any help.

It could well be the clutch, which is an easy inexpensive repair. Take of the cabinet and use a jumper wire to bypass the lid switch and put it on spin. If you can see the clutch turning but the machine not spinning then the clutch is likely the problem.

See the Sticky at the top of the Washer repair section by Richappy on direct drive brakes, and check the brakes at the same time.

My one caveat is that given that you have had to replace the coupling so many times that suggests a possible problem with the transmission. Usually a coupling only has to be replaced once.

Given that you do not have any money in this machine you may want to go ahead and replace it. Sales are now putting the price of a basic top loader at or below $300.00. You might want to get a new one and then go worry about other things.
