this machine when in the wash cycle with agitate for a few seconds and then stop. then will start again after a few minutes and then staop again. It also does this in the spin cycle. any ideas on what this could be?

The motor could be shorting out, but a more likely problem is that the control unit is shutting off power intermittently to the motor.
