I have a A510S Maytag Washer here...and its not working. It’s not a new machine by any means, but it been a sturdy performer for u for a long time and I’d like to bring it back to life. Here’s the situation... We returned home after turning the washer on and found the tub full of water. The timer had gone completely through the regular fabric cycle my wife normally uses and into the permanent press cycle where it stopped. As I said, the tub was full and interestingly the clothes did not appear to have gotten agitated (they still appeared dirty). I’ve tried this knob in every position since and I can’t get it to drain or agitate. I opened the panel and all the wires appear connected and nothing is loose. The timer motor ticks away when I turn the knob to the start of the regular cycle. It filled the tub even further when I pushed the ‘large load’ knob but when the tub should have agitated and spun it did nothing...just kept ticking right on through the ‘off’ position between the regular and permanent press cycle. Into the permanent press cycle where it stopped at the end of that cycle...still full of water. I’m guessing its a timer or timer motor issue....or maybe both. Is there a way to confirm this before spending $150+ to by both pieces and replacing them? Or am I way off on my diagnosis...could it be something else?

Most probably a bad timer. If it is metal, remove the plastic cover and inspect the timer contacts and large white plastic barrel that actuates the contacts for burnt marks. If so, order a new timer.
