There are two types of brake/clutch assemblies for the Maytag top load washers, depending on the model number (LAT or MAV). Either way, there are special tools involved, LAT Part number: AP3856708

The MAV will need Brake rotor brake stator and thrust bearing assembly, Part number: AP4045273
Part number: AP4373023
Part number: AP4009132
Both brake assemblies, can be accessed with the washer laid on it's back, or the front of the washer propped up and against the wall. Once you get us a model number, we'll be able to better assist you. :) :) :)
