My GE microwave started sparking behind the waveguide cover. The cover was scorched. When I removed the cover, I noticed the part behind it had a scorched appearance. I replaced the waveguide cover and the microwave worked fine for a couple of days, now it is sparking from the same place again. Is the part behind the waveguide cover part of the magnetron?

Yes. Check first for signs of loose connection on the leads to the magnetron. STEP ONE: ALWAYS UNPLUG MACHINE AND SHORT THE CAPACITOR BEFORE PUTTING HANDS INTO THE CABINET. If you don't see anything obvious, you may need to replace the magnetron. This is trickier than it looks. You must do a microwave leak test whenever you remove and replace a magnetron. Excessive microwave leakage inside the cabinet can wreck havoc on the electronic controls. Also, a bad magnetron is very often a symptom of another component failure.
